Hawaiian Pollution-response Skills Exercise

  01/08/2011
Honolulu-based Coast Guardsmen have been involved in a pollution response and containment boom deployment training . Effective boom deployment is a key component of pollution response strategy. Coast Guard District 14 and Sector Honolulu service members have exercised and refined their boom deployment skills through classroom instruction and deployment simulations at the following locations: Barbers Point, Sand Island Bridge, and Keehi Lagoon.

"Every year in Hawaii the Coast Guard responds to hundreds of real and potential oil spills to ensure they are properly cleaned up to protect Hawaii's pristine waters & ecosystem," said Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Derrenbacher, chief of incident management at Sector Honolulu. "This opportunity to refine and test our boom deployment skills enhances our readiness and ability to protect local waters."
