Greenland's Oil-spill Plan Made Public

  18/08/2011
Environmental organisation Greenpeace was in action earlier this year to make oil producer Cairn publish its spill response plans for their operations in the Greenlandic area. Until recently, this did not happen as the Greenland authorities considered these plans confidential. The plan has recently been released.

Greenland oil rigCairn is drilling in four wells using two DP drilling vessels: the Ocean Rig Corvocado and he Leiv Eiriksson. The depth of these wells is about 900m in the Arctic are. Emergency reponse plans have been authorised by the Greenland Government and the National Environmental Research Institute, however Greenpeace required the plans to be public and made manifestations to get to the point. As Greenland was investigating an offshore risk policy, the plans were not public. A decision has been made to release the policy of which the Greenland authorities are claiming they are the soundest of the North Sea area, especially regarding the vulnerable environmental and harsh operational conditions.
